Five Questions

Five Questions is a mini-interview with guests that speak at one of our meetings. It is intended to provide new ideas for our members through the knowledge of an expert in some aspect of our sport.

Five Questions with Trent Tatum of The Reef Fly Shop in Alcova, Wyoming near the North Platte River.

1. What is your favorite fishery?
Grey Reef.

2. What is your favorite style of fishing?
Streamer fishing.

3. What is your favorite fish?
Big Grey Reef brown trout.

4. What is your favorite fly?
Goldie. It's a bugger style pattern of our own concoction (white with a gold estaz underbody) and the fish on the Platte love it.

5. If you could give one piece of advice to a fly fisher, what would it be?
Confidence. You gotta have confidence in what you're fishing with. This is an often underrated piece of the puzzle. If you don't have faith in what your using (fly pattern, equipment, etc.) it's probably not going to work.

Five Questions with Nick Teynor; Western Rivers Flyfisher guide.

1. What is your favorite fishery?
Harriman Ranch, ID - Henry's Fork. This fishery has it all for me. Tough fish, insects galore, and it really brings the ability to cast and fish in total harmony with the elements. Every fish is a treasure, and it really puts the sport and life in perspective for me. There is, as far as I know, no other place like it in the world.

2. What is your favorite style of fishing?
I enjoy all aspects of fishing! There are techniques that I prefer to do, such as soft hackles and dry flies, but I really love all the techniques! Every technique provides you with a new lens in which to view a fish's world, and it makes you a better angler in the long run. Versatility and adaptability are the keys to success.

3. What is your favorite fish?
I have always had a love for large West Slope Cutthroats ever since I was a kid. The confidence in how they rise, their fight is stupendous, and the coloring on the older fish is something that only pictures can describe. In a nutshell, these fish taught me everything that I know today, and I will always have a passion and love for these wonderful fish.

4. What is your favorite fly?
This one varies depending on the seasons, but for the summer months I love throwing a Peacock PMX. It can imitate cicadas, caddis, stoneflies, crane flies, hoppers, beetles...it is just a great bug. And it works extremely well for people who are fishing dry-dropper rigs because of its floatability. Spring/Fall: Parachute Adams in different sizes and colors. This bug, like a Peacock PMX, is just a dynamite fly that can tied and dressed for any occasion. Between these two flies, I have a large chunk of my fishing taken care of.

5. What is the best advice you could give to a fly fisher?
Fly-fishing is a journey, not a destination. It is not something that anyone can truly master, and it is a sport that thrives on learning and growing everyday you spend on the water. Take your time, slow down and smell the roses, learn to cast, learn the bugs, and your experiences on the water will noticeably become more enjoyable.
